Hongkun Art Gallery

Penda Architecture conceived Hongkun Art Gallery project in 2013, which is located on the outskirts of Beijing. It took about one year to refurbish the interior of 2000 sqm space composed of a ground floor and a basement.

The main architects of this project are Sun Dayong and Chris Precht, who are also the founders of Penda Architecture. Chris Precht left Penda and came back to his country Austria in 2017. With his wife Fei, they created their studio Precht in Salzburg. However, Hongkun Art Gallery remains a successful collaboration between Sun Dayong and Chris Precht.

The curved entrance is a sculptural artwork itself. It welcomes gently the public into the reception area and guides them naturally into the exhibition rooms.

The inspiration of architects came from the landscape painting with mountains and valleys. The arches and counter-arches are like landscape merged into the gallery space.

The fluid curves seem to keep weaving slowly and smoothly, which makes this area not static, but dynamic. As this entrance is also used for occasions like exhibition openings, it let people stay here to have a drink and a discussion. This area provides also a harmonious and vivid atmosphere.

The white-colour walls and yellow lighting give a warm and welcoming sensation. The light-green translucent glass and red vertical characters remind the ancient Chinese colour and style.
