Meditation Hall

Maybe sometimes we could offer ourselves a little time and space to self-examine, to thank and appreciate what we have, to seek the balance under ethic and spirituality, instead of actively engaged in the high-speed materialist society.

This Meditation Hall is located on a commercial street in a residential area. Initially, these were six retail boutiques. The real estate company Country Garden then planned to have a cultural centre for the residents, to hold some activities like the tea ceremony, yoga, kōdō (the art of appreciating incense), ikebana (the art of flower arranging), etc.

Influenced by the Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara’s House in White (1966), HIL Architects wanted to build an inward world within the existing site, by reconstructing the volume and dividing the space. However, the architects would also preserve the original structure of concrete columns and beams, and leave them visible.

The entrance, corridor and water hallway is an inner circuit, guiding the guests from the outside world to the inside space. The soft natural light and dimmed pendant lamps emphasis the tranquil atmosphere.

From the bright and busy commercial street, then arrive at the water hallway, finally into the intimate room. This itinerary is already a spiritual experience.

Here’s a video on YouTube about this Meditation Hall.
